In 2013 I was tasked with creating a large-scale concert and awards show dedicated to the bass guitar. In the past, the Bass Player events had occurred in small clubs and were sparsely attended and made little profit. My main goal was making a “not so sexy” event very sexy and in the process, double profits. I booked the 2013 Bass Player Live! Concert to take place at The Fonda Theater in Hollywood and secured the talent and title sponsor.

The Event:
Every fall in Los Angeles, Bass Player Magazine stages their legendary Bass Player Live! event. Bass Player Live! is a 2-day gathering of the world’s greatest bass players, bass manufacturers, fans and students. Part convention, part education, part rock & roll. The event culminates at a giant awards show/all-star concert.
At Bass Player Live! it’s all about bass and the men and women who have become masters of the instrument. Past recipients of the Lifetime Achievement awards include Jack Bruce, Jaco Pastorius, Bootsy Collins, Chris Squire and Larry Graham.
This year’s Bass Player Live! Concert took place at Los Angeles’s famed Fonda Theater. This 31,000-square-foot 1920’s-era concert venue is located on Hollywood Boulevard. The show honored bass legends Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath, Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats and blues icon, Willie Dixon. Guests speakers and performers included Mike Dirnt, Zakk Wylde, Corey Taylor, Tal Wilkenfeld, Jason Newsted and Sebastian Bach.

“Thank god Josh Bernstein has taken over Bass Player Live!”

“There was enough energy here to power the entire city of Los Angeles.”

“A myriad of metal’s elite paid homage with a stirring, stunning, and soaring set of Sabbath classics.”
—Rick Florino, Artist Direct
