In 1998 I took it upon myself to try and self-publish my own magazine that combined elements of the magazines that I had grown up with and admired such as Mad, National Lampoon, Popsmear and Grand Royal. I felt that no one was covering the music, art, and pop culture that my friends and I were into, so we wanted to create a home to celebrate all of these genres. In the proceeding years we became an award-winning, nationally distributed, glossy, full-color magazine that was both a creative and financial success.

The Project:
Created in 1998 by Josh Bernstein, Royal Flush is part pop culture mag, part rock art carnival, part comic book, and all-around irreverent fun. Labeled by many as the reason print isn’t dead, Royal Flush is now approaching its tenth year in publication and is read and respected the world over by more than 50,000 of the most serious fans of music, art, comics and rock & roll culture. Recent issues of Royal Flush have boasted cover stories with Rob Zombie, Hugh M. Hefner, Danny DeVito & the cast of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Joan Jett, Patton Oswalt, My Chemical Romance and the Misfits. Known as the unofficial home of modern underground illustration, Royal Flush has had the honor of publishing the artwork of such talents as Drew Friedman, Peter Kuper, Tara McPherson, Basil Gogos, Ed Repka, Danny Hellman, Tim Bradstreet, Brian Ewing, Derek Riggs, Jim Steranko, Al Jaffee, Jason Edmiston, Paul Pope, James Jean and Jim Mahfood. Royal Flush has also made it’s way to the small screen, with prominent placement in HBO’s Bored to Death and Nickelodeon’s Alien Dawn. With rave reviews from The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Post, and the Village Voice, how can you lose with a Royal Flush?

The pop-culture coverage skewers everything in its path .Treat yourself to a copy of Royal Flush, and enjoy a rare reminder of just how inventive, subversive and wonderfully strange this creaky old genre can be.”
-Larry Dobrow, MediaPost

“It’s damn nice to read a real rock magazine that doesn’t seem to actually be about movie stars. I guess there is still hope.”

“I hereby appoint Royal Flush as the book to be whored out to all my friends and slowly destroyed by the many groping dirt hands.”
